FAQs

What is the route like?

The route covers 32 miles in a clockwise flow around the perimeter of Manhattan, beginning and ending at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.  It is a relatively straightforward path consisting mostly of concrete and pavement paths.  There are a few confusing spots which we'll have marked so you don't make a wrong turn if you decide to walk a portion on your own.  We're following the route of a group called "Shorewalkers."  Check out their Google Maps overlay here.

Sample paths along the route.

What about food and drinks during a 12+ hour day?

We encourage you to bring water and snacks for the route.  There are three options: you can walk with a backpack, stash the bag with us at to access it at Mile 19 (Carl Schurz Park), or stop anywhere along the way to grab a bite and/or drink (it is Manhattan, after all!).  If you leave the bag with us at the start, we'll transport it to Carl Schurz Park and then back again to the Intrepid after you've continued on.

Are there are any bathrooms along the way?

There are 10 planned bathroom breaks using public facilities along the route.  Of course, you're free to stop into any bathroom you can find in Manhattan along the way, as needed.  Here's a list of the planned stops:

  • 79th St Boat Basin
  • Riverbank State Park
  • Inwood Hill Park
  • Inwood Hill Park 2
  • Swindler Cove
  • Thomas Jefferson Park
  • Carl Schurz Park
  • East River Park
  • Pier 45
  • Chelsea Piers

is this event coordinated with nyc and open to the public?

No, we're conducting this walk of our own cognizance.  It has NOT been coordinated with the city as the entire route is on publicly-accessible paths.  We'll be walking it together and wearing our t-shirts to stay as a group.

does the walk go rain or shine?

Yes, if it's raining, we're training (er, walking).  May temperatures in NYC are typically 60-74 deg F, but this spring is supposed to be relatively cool and dry.  Either way, we'll be out at 8:00 AM to kick this off, rain or shine.

what if i only want to walk a part of the loop?

If you only want to walk a certain portion(s) of the loop in honor of somebody you knew, that's encouraged!  Registration includes an option to indicate which miles you are walking (we'd like to have awareness of who's helping us honor the fallen).  You can walk it alone or link up with the group.  Our planned pace is just above 2.5 miles per hour, so for your approximate planning purposes: mile 5 at 10:00 AM, mile 10 at 12:00 PM, mile 15 at 2:00 PM, mile 20 at 4:00 PM, mile 25 at 6:00 PM, mile 30 at 8:00 PM.  If you plan to link up at a certain point, please indicate such on your registration - we'll provide text updates throughout the day on our location.

can i have access to the google map for the walk?

Yes!  Once you register, you will be provided with the link to access the overlay, including mile markers and restrooms.

what happens at the end of the walk?

We're planning a small commemoration post-walk, as well as an informal, non-hosted meeting at a local restaurant and bar called Gotham West Market.  We hope to see you there at about 8:30 PM, whether you walked or not!

How do I sign up?  How much is it?

Registration is $25 and includes a commemorative t-shirt, plus half of the fees as a donation to The Wingman Foundation.  You can fill out a registration form here.  Registration will close at midnight on Saturday, May 28th.
